A Rookie of a Angel Empty
PostSubject: A Rookie of a Angel   A Rookie of a Angel I_icon_minitimeTue Apr 12, 2011 8:31 pm

There was hardly anywhere to move amongst the mass of humanity that had surrounded me and entered my house. Old friends, past rivals, and anyone who was just happy to see me finally win a major tournament gathered around, chatting with one another and consuming alcohol like it was going out of style. A barrage of heavy metal and hardcore rap blasted out of my stereo, much to my displeasure - I despised any sort of rhyming lyrics about gangs and money. I was beginning to think this party couldn't have come at a worse time, as I wandered around my home, cell phone in hand, trying to watch the video I had taken of being in the casino. Everywhere I turned, someone would extend their hand, wishing to give me props or a pat on the back. Normally, an occasion like this, celebrating such an achievement would make me want to be the center of the party and bask in the glory of coming out on top, emerging victorious - but not this time.

"How does it feel, Savage?" a familiar voice spoke to me. It was a voice I had grown accustomed to; a voice that belonged to someone I could trust greatly. Turning around in one swift motion, I found myself face-to-face with Billy.

"Pretty good, but not as sweet as it should be. I have other things on my mind, unfortunately," I replied, handing Billy my cell phone and placing my hands in my pockets.

"What's this?" he asked me, rummaging through the videos I had stored on my phone. As soon as the video I had wanted him to see was highlighted, I moved my hand out of my pocket and pressed the 'talk' button, making the video play.

"This is why I haven't been myself lately. I have to get down there and check it out," I could see the screen of my phone reflect in Billy's eyes, watching what had happened at the casino as I passed the washroom, too stoned to give a damn about the blood flowing from under the door. Billy's face began to show a look I hadn't seen in a long time: concern, drenched in an immortalizing awe.

"Savage, this is serious. Wouldn't you rather go to the poli--" he stopped talking and handed the phone back to me just as one of May's cousins came over, peering over Billy's shoulder.

"What was that video? I think I saw some blood," she asked, her red highlights capturing Billy's attention for a moment - he seemed sort of enticed by them. I personally had forgotten the woman's name; May wasn't really too close to anyone on her side of the family, so I hadn't gotten to meet many of them.

"It was the trailer for the new... uh... Saw movie," Billy improvised, looking May's cousin in the eye, "how about we go have a drink?" he asked her, smiling.

"Um, okay," she replied, walking with Billy towards the assortment of liquors that had been set up for the party. As he walked with her, he looked over his shoulder, staring me right in the eye and spoke with his lips, never saying a word. I knew exactly what he said though, 'meet me on the balcony in five minutes.' I wasted no time, and headed towards the balcony, greeted with even more congratulatory high-fives and words of encouragement from my fellow friends and people I had worked with previously. Some of the men and women I couldn't even recognize through their battle scars and bruises. Wrestling had taken its toll on all of us, leaving our faces bloodied, but our desire to be the best, stronger than ever.

Cigarette smoke blew into the musky air as I stood on my balcony, staring up at the stars in the beautiful night sky. It was odd for me to be all alone while a party was going on inside in my honour, yet the fact that I trusted Billy as much as I did May, left me with a desire to know what he thought of the situation. From behind me, I could hear the door slide open and a familiar sigh.

"That girl really liked me," Billy said, walking towards the balcony, standing beside me, his two hands rested on the railing. "Can you believe she wanted my phone number?"

"What did you tell her?" I asked, blowing smoke into the wind.

"I told her I didn't have a phone. The last time I tried to marry into your family look what happened," his words were a little sceptical.

"She's part of May's family, whoever she is," I replied, taking my phone out once again, while I slightly bit down on my cigarette with two of my front teeth. "So Billy, what do you think?"

"I think you need to stop overdosing on those things. They work for May and I, but for you, they--" I interrupted him right there; there was something I had to get off my chest.

"About you and May..." I began, finding it hard to speak with my cancer-stick in my mouth. Spitting it down onto the ground below, I turned to Billy, locking eyes with him, "you don't... well, have feelings for her? Don't you not?"

Billy looked at me with a confused look on his face, obviously startled by my unorthodox use of words that were all jumbled together. I was nervous, talking to one of my few friends about having sexual thoughts about my wife. Last I heard, he hadn't found anyone new since my sister had died, and it pained me to think of Billy pleasing himself to thoughts of May.

"Andrew, of course I have feelings for her, don't I not?" Billy said, mocking me slightly. I felt a little perplexed, but he just shook his head and stared back ahead, into space. "She's a good woman, and I'll be the first to admit, I am quite jealous that you come home to her every night. She must be awesome to fuck."

"Well yeah," I began, but soon realized agreeing to such a theory, regardless of how true it was, just so happened to be completely out-of-line.

"I'm happy for you, though. I don't like her anymore than you do, and if anything, I like her less in that sort of way. Hell, the only reason I care about her that much is because she's your wife, and you're my friend," his words came as a bit of a surprise to me, but I had to say, I was glad with what he did say; it could have been a lot worse. "Now, as far as that video on your phone... I take it you must be a bored man."

"I'm thinking visiting the casino again. Maybe, I don't know - examining the scene. What good have the police ever done for us? Besides, it's not like I'll be killing anyone," Billy smiled, and shrugged his shoulders.

"Let's say you do find out who caused the ruckus in that washroom, how are you going to deal with it? Put on a mask and mail the local newspaper a picture with you standing over the man who did it? Savage, this isn't a comic book," his words were true; I hadn't thought that far ahead. "Besides, don't you think the police would have cleaned up the place anyway? I'll be surprised if you could find anything - it's not your place to do this. It's not like before."

"What happened a year ago with us and May was our mission. Now... heh, I'm flying solo," my mind was made up, regardless of what Billy thought; maybe it was time I became some sort of private investigator.

"Well, be sure to find that wookie in the back of your ship then," he laughed, taking note of my whole 'flying solo' analogy.

"I'll be sure to keep that in mind," I responded, just as the balcony door was whipped open. Both Billy and I turned around and could see May standing before us with a Smirnoff Ice in-hand.

"Andrew, go make a speech," she awkwardly said, rocking back and forth.

"Do I have to?" I replied in a joking voice.

"If you don't there won't be any really good sex for you tonight," she laughed, turning around, nearly banging into the door. Billy turned to me, as I did to him, trying not to laugh.

"Somehow, I just knew that was going to happen," he simply said, following me back inside where May began beating at her glass with a spoon, trying to get everyone's attention.

"Everyone!" she screamed, getting the majority of people to cease talking, while a few others continued their chit-chat. "Everyone!" she yelled, causing every last person to stop what they were doing and look at her. "That's better. Um, I just wanted to thank you all for coming. And uh, Andrew just wanted to say a few words."

May left the front of the room, taking another sip of her drink in the process as my friends pushed me forward to where she was once standing, expecting me to give some sort of victory speech - something I had already done. I looked at everyone who had shown up: Billy, most of May's family, people I had worked with, managers, you name it - everyone was here because of me. I took a deep breath, and decided to break the silence.

"Thank you all for coming," I began, realizing I was still holding my phone. I gazed down at it, remembering my newfound goal in life - my new mission. "Whatever happens in this world always happens for a reason, whether it be a tragic accident or winning a trophy..." I gazed down next to me where the 1991 OSW World Rookie Tournament trophy sat, polished nicely, beaming with a surreal glow. Turning back to everyone, I started speaking again, "when things happen, they are meant to happen and with great power comes great responsibility..."

"Spider-man is on your mind tonight, Savage?" Billy called from the back, laughing, pouring himself a drink. I shrugged my shoulders and decided to go on with my speech.

"Now, I have an opportunity to become OSW World Champion. I have a match - a title match - anytime, anywhere I choose, and when the time is right, I am going to make good on my promise that I will climb to the top of wrestling industry. It doesn't matter if it's Seth Logan or Steve Carter as world champion; I'm going to guarantee victory," tossing my phone into the air with my right hand, I managed to catch it with my left, thinking about what I was going to set out to do. "Tonight marks an important day for me: it was three months ago that I had my first-ever wrestling match. I lost mind you, but it was the first time I ever did battle in the squared-circle. And tonight I am happy to announce that I'm going to be doing some soul-searching, within myself and find out just what has changed since that fateful night three weeks ago. And so, with that, I thank you all for coming. And enjoy the rest of the party."

Glasses were softly banged together at that moment, as a toast to my new approach to life, and to my promise - my guarantee to reach the pinnacle of greatness once more. The title was seemingly just above my head, dancing before my very eyes. And my first chance to face the current world champion was this week in a triple threat, along with Colt McNeil. It was time that I let the champion, Steve Carter, know that I was serious about winning at all costs.

Until then, my life was becoming even more interesting. The key to a life-and-death situation was in the palm of my hand, and I had a job to do. I held my phone tightly, keeping it by my side as I walked around my home, which was now populated by drunks. It felt good though - having people who were happy I had finally won the big one who were not your typical run-of-the-mill wrestling fans. And I embraced them all, for they were my family, albeit not by blood, but perhaps since the majority of us were in-fact warriors of the ring...

I stopped thinking for a moment, as I was called into a picture with some of my old colleagues. "Andrew, get that fucking trophy and get in for the shot," someone called to me, urging me to grab the one thing that symbolized that which had alluded me for so long - my tournament trophy.

And there we all stood together in the picture. As brothers. As sisters. As mentors. As fans. As dreamers. As owners. As managers. As wrestlers. Through sweat and through tears, we were all...

...Bonded by blood.
