A Victim of Circumstance

Chuck walks, Kim O’Day holding to his arm. He looks at her, trying to think of what to say.

Chuck Matthews: “Nice night.”

Kim looks up at the sky, and smiles.

Kimberly O’Day: “Yeah…”

The last couple of weeks had been….interesting, to say the least. A lot of unaddressed awkwardness between them…or at least, that’s what Chuck had noticed.

Chuck Matthews: “You’re not angry at me, are you?”

Kim raises her eyebrow, looking at him.

Kimberly O’Day: “No…should I be?”

Chuck Matthews: “Not yet, at least.”

Kim laughs, and hugs Chuck tighter.

Kimberly O’Day: “I missed you.”

Chuck kisses her forehead.

Chuck Matthews: “Happy we’re back together?”

Kimberly O’Day: “Very.”

She looks up at Chuck.

Kimberly O’Day: “Are you?”

Chuck Matthews: “Of course.”

There’s a silence.

Chuck Matthews: “You know I never meant that, right?”

Kimberly O’Day: “You aren’t happy?”

Chuck Matthews: “I mean, the whole reason we broke up in the first place. I was just…I don’t know. Things were rough, I guess. I shouldn’t have said any of that.”

Kimberly O’Day: “Are you apologizing?”

Chuck Matthews: “Working on it.”

Kim laughs, and holds her chin up, smirking smugly.

Kimberly O’Day: “I got Chuck Matthews to apologize.”

She struts away from Chuck, walking a few steps ahead of him, holding her head high. Chuck grabs her by the waist, pulling her back. She kisses him.

Kimberly O’Day: “You love me.”

Chuck Matthews: “I always did.”

The two keep walking.

Kimberly O’Day: “So go on. How have things been? It feels like we really haven’t talked in forever.”

Chuck Matthews: “We’ve done nothing but talk for the past week and a half.”

Kimberly O’Day: “That was about us. What else has been going on? How’s your brother and sister? How’s Ashley?”

Chuck Matthews: “They’re doing fine, I guess. Jess is getting ready to start her residency. I haven’t heard much of Chris lately. I have no idea what he’s been up to.”

Kimberly O’Day: “What about Ashley?”

Chuck Matthews: “Ashley is…I don’t know.”

Kimberly O’Day: “You don’t know?”

Chuck Matthews: “She’s dating Alison Williams now.”

Kimberly O’Day: “Really? Like, the Alison I know? Or a different Alison Williams?”

Chuck Matthews: “IWF Alison. My daughter has a girlfriend…”

Chuck sighs. He still wasn’t too fired up about that whole situation.

Kimberly O’Day: “About time.”

Chuck looks at her.

Chuck Matthews: “What was that?”

Kim chuckles.

Kimberly O’Day: “Ashley coming out. About time she finally did it.”

Chuck Matthews: “…..what?”

Kimberly O’Day: “Oh come on, like we didn’t see this coming? No offense Chuck, but your daughter isn’t exactly the girliest girl in the world.”

Chuck Matthews: “So?”

Kimberly O’Day: “I mean, she hardly ever wore makeup. She was constantly hanging around guys, had nearly no girl friends. She’s always been really controlling and dominant. We used to talk about sex. She told me she loved to get-“

Chuck Matthews: “Stop. Just…no. Stop. And what does that have to do with anything? None of that automatically means you’re….like her.”

Kimberly O’Day: “I’m just saying…looking back in retrospect, we probably should have seen it coming.”

Chuck shrugs.

Chuck Matthews: “Who knows?”

Kimberly O’Day: “You don’t seem happy about it.”

Chuck Matthews: “It’s weird.”

Kimberly O’Day: “Who cares? Is she happy?”

Chuck Matthews: “As far as I know.”

Kimberly O’Day: “So let her be. She’s had it rough. We always worried about her, especially when her thing with Nick was falling apart. She needs someone she can just spend time with, and be happy with. Don’t ruin that for her.”

Chuck Matthews: “I’m still not too happy about it.”

Kimberly O’Day: “You don’t have to be. You just have to accept it, and be glad that she’s happy.”

Chuck shrugs.

Chuck Matthews: “I guess.”

Kim smiles, and the two keep walking.

Kimberly O’Day: “How far is it?”

Chuck Matthews: “Another couple blocks, I think.”

Kimberly O’Day: “Why did we walk this far?”

Chuck laughs.

Chuck Matthews: “I have no idea. The hotel’s close. Just a bit longer.”

Kimberly O’Day: “My feet hurt.”

Chuck lifts Kim off her feet, and she squeals, holding tight to Chuck’s neck. She kisses him.

Chuck Matthews: “You were saying?”

Kim shakes her head.

Kimberly O’Day: “Let’s get back to the hotel.”

Chuck Matthews: “I’ll make this really short and sweet.

I don’t know who the fuck you are.

I don’t know where the fuck you came from.

I don’t know why the fuck you think you can beat me.

Everything is part of a plan. I have a plan.

I am going to win this tournament. I am going to win this briefcase.
