| -Inside the Jail of the Church of Salvation-
Lucifer Angel, unaware of Shadow Demon’s visit, was still fast asleep. Despite being in same room as he and Rogue, Lucifer was miles away. He was dreaming, but it was more than a dream – it was a memory, a vivid vision of time gone past.
In this dream, he was sitting at a large, polished wooden table, eating dinner with his foster parents. The room around them was grey with indifference, uninteresting, like someone had painted every piece of furniture as well as the room the same colour. They weren’t, but it felt that way. His father sat to his right. He was still wearing his business suit from work, and was delicately picking at his chicken, looking quite nonplussed about if it entered his mouth at all or not. His ran like a river of black tar from his collar all the way down his white dress shirt. His grey hair sat in a heap on the top of his round square head, and his eyes peeked out through his spectacles. He maintained eye contact with no one at the table, preferring only to stare straight on, as if something exciting was going on in the next room that none of them knew about.
His mother sat across from him, legs crossed and withdrawn, somewhat like his father. Although she had the look of a viper or a python – like she could just lash out at any moment without warning, and give you a fatal bite. Her green eyes fit this comparison, as they were an intense dark green, and continued to dart from one side of her face to the other. She had gold earrings through the lobes of her ears, and her dark brown hair was combed into a bun. Looks could be deceiving; it seemed, as despite having the nature of a poisonous animal, she was very attractive. Her slim figure was curvy and her long legs stretched out from her business skirt into long boots.
However, Lucifer was not concerned all that much with his parents. All he could think about was his recent discoveries – discoveries which suggested that he was not the son of Margret and David Eggman. A few weeks ago, he was looking through their photo albums, and in the early years there were various pictures of who he believed to be his mum and dad, except...they were with a different boy. It wasn’t him. He had checked, and double checked, but his younger self and the boy in the pictures were nowhere near similar. He’d flicked forward a few years, and all of a sudden the photos stopped featuring the boy. For a few pages it was just his parents, and then suddenly the pictures began to feature a little boy again, and this time it was him.
So it had to mean that...either he was their second son, and their first had died, or...he was adopted, or fostered. The second option seemed the most likely, because earlier child looked so much different from him, he couldn’t imagine him being his older brother, even though he was only going on looks. In the end, he had decided that he would confront his so called “parents” about the matter at dinner that night. That time, was now.
Lucifer finished his mouthful, set down his knife and fork, and looked up at Dave and Margaret, who were still pecking at their dinners.
Young Lucifer Who is that other kid in the photo album?
The loud, metallic ‘clang’ sound of Margaret’s dropped knife and fork echoed through the room, like a lightning bolt striking the earth from the heavens. Her face was a painting of shock and horror, while David was a perfect opposite. He instead seemed very calm, and was staring straight ahead, just as he had been when he was eating his dinner. Lucifer eagerly awaited a response, although he sensed that disappointment was right around the corner.
He was right.
David looked at him straight in the eyes, and said:
David We don’t talk about him anymore, Lewis.
Then, as if nothing notable or debatable had occurred, he returned to eating his dinner.
“WAKEY WAKEY MR. ANGEL!”
Suddenly brought back to reality, Lucifer Angle’s eyes shot open, and he sat bolt upright in his bunk. What he saw was Rogue and, for the first time in real life, Shadow Demon, looking down on him. His heartbeat quickened almost tenfold as he almost leaped off of his bunk and rushed forward to Shadow Demon, who he noticed was holding open the cell door.
Lucifer Angel Your-your really him?
Shadow opened his arms and grinned madly.
Shadow Demon The one and only! Come give your big bro a hug!
Lucifer grinned back, and embraced him. Rogue just had to smile at the first meeting of the brothers.
Rogue AWWWW!
They both shot her a dirty look. Rogue quickly averted her eyes to a spot on the ground.
Rogue Yeah yeah, I get it...sorry...
Shadow laughed, and slapped Lucifer on the back before letting go.
Shadow Demon It’s, you know, good to finally meet cha my friend!
Lucifer Angel Yeah this is incredible, how did you...We thought you were-
Shadow Demon Uh uh uh! Allow me to explain-
Rogue ACTUALLY, I think I would like to do the explaining? Thank you very much!
Shadow shrugged and folded his arms.
Shadow Demon You know what they say, you know, about the women being scorned and everything.
Lucifer laughed and nodded.
Lucifer Angel Yeah, it’s true, ain’t it?
Shadow nodded, and then motioned for Rogue to continue.
Rogue OK! So what happened was...
**
Rogue stood in the darkness, gripping Shadow Demon’s hand through the rusty metal bars of the jail. She couldn’t believe it was actually him, but at the same time it was as if she had strangely expected this. It was weird but she had always had this idea that...no matter what happened, the love between her and Shadow could never die, so fate would keep bringing them together again, no matter what happened. She felt quite awkward about it actually – it made her sound like a generic teenage girl...which she wasn’t. Well, not anymore...
Rogue So, can you get me out of here? Do you have the keys?!
She said, in a loud whisper. She didn’t want to alert the other inmates that she was planning to escape. Even though they had no doubt heard Shadow enter, they probably had just thought it was a guard coming to check up on them. In the dark it was hard to identify anyone from a distance, even Shadow Demon with his bright purple suit and striking white face-paint.
Shadow Demon Unfortunately, I do not...
Rogue Damn...
Shadow Demon BUT! I know a way to get them. I just thought I’d better come here first because I saw them lock you up, and I, well, you know, wanted to make sure you were, uh, okay!
Rogue allowed herself a quiet laugh. Shadow was funny in that he never liked to let you in on his real emotions, because he was always so crazy. However, if you got to know him really well, then you could tell when he really was concerned and when he wasn’t, and when he was angry or sad. You could also tell when he was faking these emotions as all a part of his persona. Sometimes it became hard to see the difference between the two, which seemed to give Shadow the leverage in their relationship, as he was gifted with the ability to constantly make her angry on purpose, just for the fun of it. She would always make sure she got him back though, as through their relationship Rogue had suddenly found the ability to pull practical jokes on Shadow, even though he was king at them.
Rogue So how are we going to get these keys?
Shadow Demon Well, uh, unfortunately my daring scheme requires you to stay here for tonight, as getting these keys is going to be very tricky indeed...
Rogue Tell me how, ESS DEE!
She was slightly disappointed that she was going to have to wait the rest of the night, but she guessed she should just be thankful that she was being rescued at all, after the situation had been so dire. Strangely, she had been completely exhausted when she had laid down to sleep not 20 minutes ago, but now she felt full of energy. Love could do many miracles, she thought.
Shadow Demon Well I gotta act like I’m one of them still, and wait for them to head to bed. Then I’ll sneak into one of their rooms and steal that person’s keychain. I can’t do it now, because they’re patrolling still, and if I tried to pickpocket them I don’t think it would work out too well, if you know what I mean...
Rogue I know what ya mean...
Shadow Demon Once I get them keys, I can be the, you know, gallant hero, and come here and rescue you! I’ll come early in the morning, when most of the guards are still snoozing.
Rogue Sounds like a plan!
Rogue suddenly realised that she hadn’t told Shadow anything about finding his brother. It must have just been the rush of excitement that had gone to her head, she thought.
Rogue Oh, I can’t believe I forgot to tell you, but I found your brother!
For a second, Shadow’s face was blank, and then all of a sudden a look of recognition spread over it.
Shadow Demon Hold on...You mean...The one that...Was he the one that was taken away?!
Rogue You remember that?!
Shadow Demon Yeah, only JUST! I remember it because at the same time he was born, I was about to leave to uh, join the Republic of Fail...
Rogue The Asylum?
Shadow Demon You got it! Well yeah I was about to escape from the tyrants that were my parents, when I found out that my...well I don’t really like to call that harpy that my ‘mum’, but anyway, when I found out that she was gonna have another one of me, I just had to stay behind. I thought that maybe I could, uh, escape with this kid and raise him properly – so that he didn’t have to suffer the same stuff that I did. But alas, he was taken away before I had even the chance to see his ol’ mug, and so I left without a second thought.
Rogue So this would be your first time to ever see him?
Asked Rogue, as she stepped back and allowed Shadow to see what he could of his brother, who was lying in the top bunk. Rogue then climbed up to the top bunk and was about to try and wake him up, when she realised it would probably be a bad idea. He still had that broken arm, and his nose was most likely broken as well, so the right thing to do would be to let him have his beauty sleep.
Rogue I just remembered, I better not wake him up because he’s injured from the chase we had with Salvation.
Shadow looked back to her.
Shadow Demon You..had a chase?
Rogue You don’t remember?! Well I’ll start from the beginning...
Shadow Demon Oh yes, do tell! What, uh, happened after the whole torture thingy? How did you stay alive?!
Rogue Well after they thought they’d killed me, Salvation dumped me somewhere abandoned outside the City. Luckily, I was discovered by this middle-aged woman named Jenna. She took me in to her house and treated me. I stayed there for a month until I was healthy and all my wounds had healed. But on the night that I was gonna leave, Salvation popped up again. They killed Jenna; crucified her on top of her own house. I managed to escape, and I was leaving them in my dust until I saw YOU!
Shadow Demon ME?!
Rogue Yeah YOU! So anyway I ran up to you, thinking I was saved, but instead you turned out to be possessed by Salvation, and knocked me out!
Shadow Demon Hey wait, it’s, uh, sorta coming back to me now...Gee, was that a good punch or what?!
Rogue YOU ALMOST BROKE MY JAW ESS DEE!
Shadow Demon Soz
Rogue It’s K! Anyway after that Salvation took me in again, and drove me back to here. They gave you the job of killing me, but I managed to fight you off, and escape by JUMPING OUT OF A WINDOW!
Shadow Demon NO WAI!
Rogue WAI. And your brother saved me from falling from my death! ON A MOTORCYCLE!
Shadow Demon Wow, I never knew he was such as classy guy!
Rogue And after that Salvation chased us through the street, and into a subway, and you tried to stop us TWICE but you failed! Eventually they run us down and stopped us though. They brought us back to the Church again and were going to execute us tonight, but they had to postpone because there’s an NLWF show on tonight, and Corey was on the card. So instead we thrown in this jail, and told to wait here overnight because they’re gonna execute us tomorrow!
Shadow Demon Well that certainly was a mouthful
Rogue YOU KNOW YOU’RE CONCERNED!
Shadow Demon Fine, fine! So I guess I have to bust you outta here huh.
Rogue So you’re gonna be here early tomorrow morning? And we can escape then?
Shadow Demon Yes indeedy! Oh, I just had an idea, what about I steal the guard’s jumpsuit? It will, you know, disguise me perfectly!
Rogue Yeah but what about me and Lucifer?
Shadow Demon Aw, well I’m sure the guard will have a, uh, few extra pairs in his wardrobe!
Rogue OK!
Shadow Demon Now I must be going! Goodbye my love, I shall not make you wait long. First, you know, thing tomorrow!
Shadow leant in and quickly kissed Rogue on the lips, before bounding away back up the corridor of the prison.
Rogue Make sure you’re on time!
Shadow Demon I ALWAYS AM! HAHAHA!
Rogue heard a loud crash as Shadow swiftly opened the door and slammed it shut behind him.
Rogue So much for being quiet...
She turned back toward the inside of the cell. Once again she stood in the dark, with the sleeping Lucifer Angel her only company. She walked over to the bunks and climbed up onto the top one. She laid her head back down onto the pillow and tiredly rolled onto the side – pulling the dirty sheet up to her chin.
And the last thing to enter her head before she fell into a deep sleep was the remnants of a poem she could remember from her youth.
"One kiss, my bonny sweetheart; I'm after a prize tonight, But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light. Yet if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day, Then look for me by moonlight, Watch for me by moonlight, I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way."
She prayed he would.
**
Rogue And THAT's what happened!
Lucifer had a look of elation on his face, while Shadow was grinning madly, as he had been during the entire story.
Lucifer Angel That's great! We can get out of here now!
At that moment, Lucifer noticed that Shadow was holding a black bag in his right hand.
Lucifer Angel Are those the guard uniforms?
Shadow nodded vigorously. Letting go of the cell door, he dropped the bag to the ground and opened it. He pulled out three grey official-looking uniforms, and threw one each to Rogue and Lucifer, keeping the third for himself. Once they had changed - Lucifer getting a little help from both of them due to his injured arm - Shadow swung the cell door open, and was about to charge out of the room when he remembered something.
Shadow Demon Oh! Lucy, about that arm. I nicked some, uh, medical supplies from the guard's room for ya.
Lucifer Angel Sweet, what is it?
Shadow bent over and reached into the pocket of his usual-wear pants which were on the floor of the cell. He pulled out a small box, and out of that he produced a plastic container housing 10 white pills. He popped two out and handed them to Lucifer.
Shadow Demon Just some painkillers, nothing, you know, fancy, but it oughta get the job done. They're supposed to be strong!
Lucifer swallowed the pills.
Lucifer Angel Thanks a heap, bro.
Shadow Demon Don't mention it! Now are we ready?
Lucifer and Rogue nodded, and so they quickly walked out of the cell, and back up the corridor - hoping to finally escape the horrors of the City of Salvation. |
