The city of Los Angeles celebrated today with the official announcement of football's return to Los Angeles, along with the signing of former IWF superstar Brandon Macdonald to lead the way. The newest expansion team of The League, one of the premier football leagues in North America, will be called the Los Angeles Earthquake. They will replace the old L.A. Riot team, that folded after only one season of play four years ago. Many fans remember the scandal that rocked The League, causing widespread changes all over the already controversial football league. New commissioner Percival Truman Jr, son of former commissioner Percival Truman began an effort to bring The League into the mainstream. While keeping the physical brutality that The League is known for, he managed to clean up the drugs, implementing new drug tests and dropping heavy punishment on anyone or any team that failed. The three -tier system was abandoned in favor of a more viewer friendly 3 divison system. These changes caused The League to thrive, with many seeing it as a faster-paced, more violent alternative to standard football.
"The League has been looking for a way to get a team back to Los Angeles after the events that lead to the folding of the Riot." Truman said at the press conference. "It was just difficult financially, plus we feared that fans might not be attracted to a team after what happened with the Riot. Luckily, with the urging of Brandon Macdonald, we managed to get it done. He's taking on a big role, but he's been such a fan of The League, and knows the business side of sports. If anyone can do it, it's Brandon Macdonald"
Macdonald's contract is not only a players contract, but also grants him ownership of the team. He'll help with the process of recruiting players before a small expansion draft, as well as hiring a staff. Rumours of another owner working with Macdonald are rampant, however, at this point we can only confirm Brandon Macdonald, with the backing of Matthews Enterprises as the sole owner of the team.
"The city of Los Angeles has been yearning for football ever since the Riot folded four years ago" Macdonald said. "With the financial backing of Matthews Enterprises, we are pleased to announce the return of football to L.A. We're excited for this opportunity, and we don't plan on letting this city down"
It was somewhat surprising to hear of the sponsorship by M.E., as they are not known for many sports business ventures outside of the wrestling business. Certainly Brandon Macdonald's ties to the IWF, M.E.'s biggest business, has some part in this. CEO Chuck Matthews or anyone from M.E. could not be reached for comment.
More information about the Earthquake and any new developments will be reported as we receive them.
