Chapter 1 Twelve Pages

Dan clicked the pen shut. He had just signed the agreement form from Skyline Media. Joe slides it his way and picks it up.

Joe: Looks all good. We're ready to go. You ready Mel?

Mel: Just about done.

While Dan and Joe were discussing the forms Mel was busy taking the filming equipment from the van and setting it up in Dan's living room. He had a Samsung Slim SH10000 XO. It was as thin as a cardboard box. The lens covered the whole front while a light on the back was able to project a recording on the wall. He had the camera on a stand at an angle that would be able to focus on Dan and Dave during the interview. He had set the Wi-Fi on to save the recording to a 20 terabyte hard drive touchpad that he had in the van. It also saved on his phone which was in his pocket just in case.

Dave: We ready to go?

Dave had walked out of the main hallway and into the living room. He had changed into his suit in the hallway bathroom. He had on a blue suit with a white dress shirt. He wore a dark red tie with stripes. He walked over to the opposite couch from Dan and sat down. Joe went over to each of them.

Joe: Here are your microphones.

Dan and Dave each took a little earplug that fit snuggly in their ear lobe.

Joe: Tap it twice to turn it on Mr. Alexander.

Dave criticizes Dan with his eyes. Dan is wearing old jeans and a gray t-shirt. While Dave is looking at him Dan is staring off to the side somewhere.

Mel: Already to go guys.

Joe: Okay, let's do it.

Mel takes out his phone.

Mel: Three, two, one.... action

With the touch of a button the camera turns on.

Dave: Hello everyone. Skyline media would like to present you with a special interview. Our guest is none other than a local legend in our county. He is most well known for his time in IWF. Dan "Deuce" Alexander. We have driven all the way to his private residence to have a few words about his time in IWF and what has happened since his departure. Good morning Mr. Alexander.

Dan: Good morning.

Dave: Please. If you would give us a brief description of your childhood and how you got into pro wrestling.

Dan looks around at Joe and then Mel who look back. Dave looks on anxiously.

Dan: I grew up in Thousand Oaks. I moved to Japan. I wrestled their briefly before returning to the U.S.

Dave looks at Dan. He was annoyed by Dan's unenthusiastic response. He was wondering whether or not he should try to get more out of him.

Dave: Sounds like a good childhood.

Dan: If you say so.

Dave's face became stern as Joe and Mel looked on with worried expressions.

Dave: Mr. Alexander. It says here that you are a black belt in Judo, and a black belt in Jui-Jitsu. Can you talk briefly about that?

Dan: Took 10 years of training combined give or take.

Dave: After you wrestled in Japan. Where did you go?

Dan: I came back to the states.

Dave: Then what?

Dan: I wrestled in a few promotions till I stumbled into IWF.

Dave: Yes, tell us about that please.

Dan: I signed a contract.

Chris: Mr. Alexander?

Dan nods.

Chris: Listen, we have something in mind for you.

Dan walks into the office. He takes a seat in one of the chairs of a round table. On the opposite end sits Chris. To his left and right sit two people on each side. He only knows Chris from a phone call a few weeks ago.

Chris: I have looked over your resume and I must say it is very impressive. I,

Chris stops to look at his colleagues.

Chris: We believe that you are the Future of IWF. We want you to be champion.

Dan looks around at the other men at the table. All of them nod in approval.

Chris: You see, we sign wrestlers left and right. But they opt out on this particular offer. They always take the lesser route and make their career their own way. We don't even offer this to most wrestlers because frankly talented ones are few and far between. I've seen what you've done lately. You've improved leaps and bounds from where you started. Now you are ready for the big leagues. Are you in or out?

Chris slides a packet of stapled papers to Dan. There must have been at least twelve pages.

Chris: Don't worry about the legal terms. Our, I mean YOUR lawyers will take care of it.

After a few seconds Dan picks up the pen and signs all twelve pages without looking at the text. When he finished he slid the paper back to Chris.

Chris: Excellent. We can start everything on the contract TODAY.

Dave: Did you ever get to see the contract?

Dan: No.

Dave: Then why did you sign it?

Dan looks at him.

Dan: I just did.

Dave: Don't you know not to sign a contract until you read it? Was it a product of you being new?

Dan: No.

Dave: Was it the money?

Dan looks straight into Dave's eyes. He starts to feel anger run through his veins.

Dave: It was the money was it.

Dan stands up out of his seat. Joe and Mel both stare in shock. Dan starts to walk towards Dave who is still sitting on the couch. Mel and Joe quickly try to stop him.

Joe: Mr. Alexander please! He didn't mean it!

Mel: Mr. Alexander!

Joe: Mr. Alexander we are terribly sorry.

Dan: GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!

Joe: Mr. Alexander please!

Dan: GET OUT!

Dave finally stands up and Joe and Mel escort him out of the house. They shut the door behind him and stand around the front.

Joe: WHAT THE FUCK DAVE!

Dave: What did I do? He's the one ruining the interview! You saw how he answered those questions.

Joe: Doesn't mean you have to provoke him!

Dave Reaches into his suit pocket. He pulls a packet of cigarettes out.

Dave: That man is a psycho! That old man has completely lost it.

He puts one in his mouth and lights it. He gives one to both Joe and Mel. They stay outside for about ten minutes smoking. None of them say a word. Finally Joe gets up and knocks on the door. To his surprise it was unlocked.

Joe: Mr. Alexander? Are you there?

Joe slowly opens the door and sees Dan sitting on the couch. As he opens the door wider he sees that Dan is carrying something in his arms and cradling it.

Baby: Daaa daa abbaaa eeee eee!

Joe hears the sounds of the baby cooing. He looks at Dan's face as he smiles at the baby. He looks back at the two outside who are still smoking. He decides to enter the house.

Joe: Mr. Alexander?

Dan looks up at him.

Joe: We would like to continue the interview if that's okay with you?

Dan looks down at the baby.

Baby: daab daab daaab eee heh!

Dan looks up at Joe again.

Dan: Come in. I'm ready.

Joe calls Dave and Mel back into the house. Dave reluctantly sits back down while he looks at Dan playing with the baby.

Dave: Your son?

Dan: Yes.

The baby turns his head and body and looks at Dave.

Dan: I named him Jude. You know, after The Beatles song. It's his favorite.

♩Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Sing a sad song and make it better.
Do doo doo do dooo doo dooo♩

Jude looks at his father in wonder. Dave smirks at the over the top scene.

Mel: We're all set.

He looks at Dan, Dave, and then Joe who gives him the nod.

Mel: Three, two, one.... action

Dave: So, after you signed the contract. What happened?

Dan: We got to work.

Dan looks at Dave

Dan: I got to work.

Staff: Here you go Mr. Alexander.

An older man with a black IWF collar shirt walks into Chris Matthew's office with a box. Dan had been waiting for Chris to arrive for a while. The man lifts the cover of the box to reveal a pair of tights. Dan looks at it.

Staff: We had them made yesterday. They come in different colors.

Dan examined them. The first thing he noticed is that it had an IWF logo in the middle of the belt line. A blue flame graphic was on the right side of the leg. As he picked it up he noticed there was foam in the inseams.

Staff: Those geniuses over there put that there cause they said it would help your armbar or something like that. It's nonsense. I say tights is tights. Nothing more.

As Dan put the tights down the man picked up a box that was on the floor beside him.

Staff: These here are your boots and knee pads Mr. Alexander.

Dan opened the box and took out a pair of black boots with kick pads attached with straps and buckles. He noticed that the blue flame was on the right boot and the right knee pad as he took those out.

Staff: Well that's about all I got for now.

The man trotted out of the room. Dan sat there with a pile of gear not know what to do. He had signed even more contracts the day before. It was starting to feel like he would never see the ring. Chris had not mentioned anything about a match. After fifteen minutes the door opened.

Chris: Mr. Alexander. I see you received our gifts to you.

Dan: Yes. Thank you.

Chris: That isn’t the only thing you got coming. We have a large paycheck coming your way this week.

Dan: Mr. Matthews am I going to see some ring action anytime soon?

Chris: That's why I'm here today.

Chris goes over to his desk and takes a seat.

Chris: All your papers are signed. You have been approved by the IWF to wrestle this upcoming weekend at the Pay-per View. Sound good?

Dan looks at him with curiosity.

Chris: You see you will be entering an over the top rope battle royal with nine other people and the winner gets a shot at the IWF Title! And the greatest part? No one knows you are in it! What do you think of that?

Dan looks in a direction thoughtfully.

Chris: Trust me when I say that we want the best for you. We want you to be successful in this company. We want you to become champion. And that only works if we trust each other. Understand?

Dan looks at him. Chris stands up and offers his hand. Dan stands up out of his seat and shakes it.

Dave: That was a big opportunity for you wasn't it?

Dan: Yes it was.

Dan was focused on the baby. He tickled his stomach.

Jude: Cuuu cuu cuu!! aaaahh!

Jude started drooling so Dan wiped it off with his own shirt. Dave momentarily had a look of disgust on his face until Dan looked back at him.

Dave: What did you really feel about it at the time?

Dan: Not much. I just wanted some ring time.

Dave: Any pressure to actually win the match?

Dan: No. If I didn't win, I didn't win. I would at least have a good showing. If I did win I got a shot at the title.

Dave: So, you didn't feel like there was any extra pressure from the company? Because they gave you so much?

Dan looked away for a second.

Dan: No. I had signed the contracts. I knew they couldn't be revoked. They would have to wait till it expired if they ever wanted to get rid of me.

Dave: How did you know?

Dan: I just knew.

A group of men in suits help him put on his wrestling gear. Afterwards a technician puts a few motion devices on him.

Technician: Alright you are all hooked up Mr. Alexander.

Dan is in a large training facility. In front of him is a punching bag. Dan is hooked up to a computer that will monitor anything from his heart rate to his brain activity. Chris had brought him out here to measure the force of his strikes.

Technician: Ready when you are.

Dan turns his attention towards the bag. With a swift motion he swings his hips to deliver a round house kick to the bag.

Technician: 2621lbs of force.

The IWF staff and Chris applaud on the sidelines.

IWF Board Member 1: We made the right decision.

IWF Board Member 2: Yes, we did. Good job scouting this one Chris.

Dan turns to Chris' direction. Chris smiles and gives him a thumbs up.
